In the 16th century, the image was found by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi’s sailor among the ruins of a burnt settlement in Cebu. The statue survived to this day, and is kept in the historic Basilica Del Santo Niño church. This event incorporates dance, music, and festivities to celebrate Filipino Christianity.

• Pasigarbo sa Sugbo (Cebu Province)

Another opulent Cebu City festival is the Pasigarbo Festival, which takes place every August. • Pasko sa Sugbo (Cebu Province)

This is not just a Cebu City festival, but a province-wide Christmas occasion. Although the main event is kicked off at the metro capital, each town and municipality celebrates their own version of the festival. The holiday festivities include giant Christmas tree lightings, markets, fireworks displays, dance and music competitions, and lots of illuminations. 

• Kadaugan sa Mactan (Lapu-Lapu City)

This event is one of the Cebu festivals that commemorate one of the greatest moments in Philippine history – the Battle of Mactan. The victory of the Mactan chieftain, Lapu-Lapu, is what kept the Spanish colonization at bay for almost 40 years. It also celebrates the province’s dynamic cuisine, incorporating Filipino and numerous global dishes into the festivities.

• Panagtagbo Sa Mandaue (Mandaue City)

• Kabkaban Festival (Carcar City)

Carcar City holds one of the most popular Cebu festivals in November. The Kabkaban Festival was said to have spiritual significance. Each dance performed was intended to drive away evil spirits. Today, festivities expanded to dance competitions, cultural performances, night markets, and a joyful parade. It’s now less about keeping negativity away, but rather inviting positive energy, good fortune, and tourism to the city. It also pays homage to St. Catherine of Alexandria.

1.  Dagitab Festival (Naga)

The City of Naga in Cebu lights up the province every December 8th. Dagitab Festival is recognized for its ever-famous Festival of Lights. Major electric providers in Cebu are stationed in Naga, such as the Korean Electric Company (KEPCO) and Therma Power Visayas, which highlights the city’s role as the main energy source of the province. The festival also coincides with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, which is why they also hold a special procession for the image of Mother Mary.

•  Karansa Festival (Danao City)

The Karansa Festival is celebrated every third Sunday of September. It is one of the Cebu festivals that bring honor to the art of dance. The name comes from the local term karansa, which refers to the dances, drinking of coconut wine, and general merrymaking done by pottery makers in the area. The main cultural elements in their dances are the basic steps, kiay, kurug, karag, and karahay (sway, shake, judder).
